K2 Jasper Crystal Meaning, Properties & Origins | Lapis London
Described as one of the world’s most intriguing stones, the rare and beautiful K2 gemstone is found in only one place on earth — the remote Karakoram Range of the Himalayas. It forms in the rugged wilderness at the base of its namesake, K2, the second-highest mountain in the world. This extraordinary K2 stone cuts, tumbles and polishes beautifully, giving it a distinctive allure unlike any other.
Although sometimes referred to as “K2 Jasper”, the stone is not actually jasper. Instead, it is a very fine white granite naturally speckled with vivid blue azurite “ink splashes”. This striking appearance has also earned it the name “Raindrop Azurite”. Because white granite and azurite almost never occur together in nature, K2 is exceptionally rare — so much so that early specimens were once suspected of being man‑made.
The blue azurite inclusions vary in size but are always circular, and some pieces also contain hints of green malachite. This natural patterning makes every K2 gemstone completely unique.
A Stone with Ancient Roots
While K2 itself is a relatively recent discovery, its blue component — azurite — has been treasured for thousands of years. The Ancient Egyptians considered azurite sacred and believed it enhanced spiritual communication. Throughout history, azurite was also used as a blue pigment in art, appearing in Chinese wall paintings from the Ming and Sung Dynasties and in European Renaissance masterpieces. It remained a key pigment until the 18th century, when Prussian Blue became widely available.
On its own, azurite is too soft and fragile for jewellery. However, within K2, the azurite is naturally protected by the surrounding white granite, allowing its vibrant blue to shine in durable, wearable pieces — making it ideal for gemstone jewellery.
